US Boat Test Report

There is an old saying that you only have one to make a first impression. Well, the folks at Regal Marine must subscribe to
that saying.
Regals 1800 LSR, at 18 ft. 2 in., is the smallest boat in Regals extensive fleet. Often the smallest boat in a manufacturers lineup is the one that a first-time boat buyer starts out with and the one that provides a first impression about boating.
The boat has a sleek, lets go play on the water, look thats complemented by many well-thought-out features and Regals penchant for quality construction. Part of the look and on-the-water performance is due to Regals FasTrac hull.
Although the hull has been around for a few years, Regal has continued to fine-tune it to properly match each model they build. Although the design features of the FasTrac hull reversed chines, stepped hull, laminar flow interrupters and conical induction system may sound a bit like a shopping list when read aloud, they make a world of difference on the water.
Our test 1800 LSR was powered by a 190-hp Mercury MerCruiser 4.3 litre V-6 with an Alpha One sterndrive spin-ning a 21-inch pitch aluminum prop. Its all the power you would likely need. I had the boat on plane in just over three seconds, past 40 mph in 8.8 seconds and topped out at 51.2 mph at 4,500 rpm.
Remember that shopping list? Its the stepped hull and reverse chines that create the lift necessary to achieve the 1800’s amazing out-of-the-hole performance.
In the lower speed ranges where wakeboarders like to play, the 1800 LSR stayed comfortably on plane with plenty of control down to 15 mph.
Onboard, theres seating for eight. In the cockpit theres a fully adjustable, swiveling helm, lounger, aft bench and a port side jump-seat. When raised, it completes the full-sized sunpad. The open bow sports two bench seats, grabhandles, drink-holders and a moulded in bow step that makes boarding easy if you beach the boat or bow-in to a dock.
First-time captains and seasoned boaters alike will appreciate the helm. It just feels right with plenty of legroom, good visibility and contemporary oversized backlit gauges set in a burl-accented dash, complete with an adjustable sport steering wheel. Theres a self-draining cooler in the companion console and above it, the standard built-in Kenwood CD player.
A constant challenge in smaller boats is storage, or
rather the lack of it. Regal has made excellent use of space in the 1800, particularly with the built-in floor locker, large enough to hold a variety of watersport toys, including a wakeboard, with room to spare.
Whether its performance, watersports or just plain on-the-water relaxing, the Regal 1800 LSR is perfect, if youre looking for a good quality sport boat that can do everything well. If it happens to be your first boat and first impression about boating, it will certainly be a positive one, sure to last a lifetime.
