| Description |
| |
"M.V. Acheron" is directly named after HMS Acheron, a surveying vessel which surveyed NZ's coast from 1849-51. Designed by Harold C. Hanson, it was built for Mr Alex Black, Dunedin and registered as a Deep Sea Research Vessel. Since her commissioning in Feb 1972, she was employed for marine research and for servicing off-shore islands - Raoul Island, south to the Auckland Islands, The Snares and a Geological Expedition Charter to the Gilbert & Ellis Islands which involved a rescue off the Kermadecs. In 1999 after an illustrious career in the outer islands, she was sold to Electronic Navigation Ltd, Auckland where she has been used for chartering and as a support vessel for numerous events ranging from the America's Cup Races, fishing competitions, the sinking of two decommissioned Naval frigates, to successfully locating the "Waimmera" (an Australian passenger ship which hit a German mine in 1918), using the company's WASSP 3D multi-beam sonar. She is still used in the Hauraki Gulf for testing purposes today - 2012.
