I am going overseas and so am selling this very fine Gentleman's Cruiser from the well loved and respected Bates Starcraft Line. A classic but with some super mod cons recently added (probably the best floating solar-powered cinema in North London).
Other Bates' Starcraft of the same size are for sale at almost double this price. I am asking less because she does not have the classic mahogany topside, however she is a lot easier to maintain with a fiberglassed roof. She would benefit from a few cosmetic touches inside and out and there is a lot that could be done to add value and further distinction (I would do it but I am off soon!). This is a great boat and a great bargain.
She will make you happy.
Hull
Teak on oak, double diagonal, very strong, elegant and classic. The subject of numerous compliments by passing old-salts. One of the most robust hulls you will find - recently painted and epoxied at the waterline.
Decks/roofs
Decks and roof have been coated with fiberglass (2009)
Heating and Safety
Morso Squirrel Stove - the stove for boats, beautiful and powerful.
Fire blanket, fire extinguishers replaced in 2009

300w max of solar panels
45 amp charge controller (so you could safely add another 300W of solar panels) showing load, charge, temeprature and loads of interesting stuff
8 sealed deep cycle leisure batteries (Yuasa SWL 85 Amp Hours each - these are top quality) installed 2009
Batteries joined by 95 square mm copper wire. Good stuff.
2.2 kw pure sine inverter-charger (Sterling pro-combi S) added 2009. Handles any power tools no trouble, cost best part of £1k. RCD - not sure if you need these for the Boat Safety - but definitely a good idea.
2 kw diesel generator (2009 electric or manual start) - very reliable and economical to run however I use this only as a backup. The solar panels have provided all my power since March and I have watched many films on my projector. In Winter you may not have enough power to project films frequently but the TV and lights are very efficient.
240V AC sockets around the boat
Several car lighter sockets - useful for charging phones, laptops and running any other DC devices.
12V LED lighting - these lights are high quality LED giving a warm and bright light (from Bedazzled - highly recommend these guys)
New auto bilge pumps (2009 [again!])

Where can I take her?
Lady Monique is very at home on the waterways of London - she fits through the Islington tunnel and all the bridges within the M25. The Bates Starcraft are river and coastal cruisers and are known to roam as far afield as the canals of France. She is a widebeam.
Does she have a permanent mooring?
No, email me to discuss options (see contact page or below).
Has she been surveyed?
It is bad to crane wooden boats out of the water - the pressure of water helps keeps the planks tightly together and thus keep the hull water-tight. Because she is not surveyed you will get a better price than a similar boat that has been surveyed - and maybe you will even get a better hull! |

Pennie is a beautiful widebeam houseboat on a fully residential mooring in West London. There is a cabin with double bed in the stern, with a sky light hatch and loads of storage space. The wheelhouse leads into the rest of the boat, with bathroom, storage room, galley and a living room.
Pennie has a Webasto diesel central heating system, a solid fuel stove and double glazing throughout. The boat is extremely well insulated and is toasty in the winter and a really nice temperature in the Summer. TV areal, telephone land line and 240 volt electricity hook up can be easily disconnected if you want to go out for a cruise.
The boat is powered by a 70hp Perkins diesel engine and although Pennie is not the speediest boat on the canals, she chugs along nicely.
The Mooring is part of a private, gated development backing onto woodworking shop (free offcuts for the stove!) a car mechanic and motorbike mechanic. There are 4 boats moored in total, who share a mooring room with toilet, shower, washing machine and dryer.
A secure car parking space also comes with the mooring.
10 minute walk to train station which gets you to Paddington in 15 minutes. |

She can be driven from the inside but also has the benefit of an outside rear driving station not often found on these boats. Her single V drive perkins diesel engine is powerful for her size which makes her an easy boat to cruise. Marpessa also has a full length sun roof in the living room, perfect for a summers day or good for some winter sun when the stove is on! 12v electrics and shoreline plug in 24v. Generous storage space throughout which makes her a very comfortable, full time live- a-board. Marpessa is being sold (reluctantly) as we are now in need of a second bedroom.

This very origional ex M.O.D.is for sale due to my age and the fact I intend to spend the rest of my retirement travelling,I have owned her for 12 years and this is a chance for someone to own a genuine World War 2 craft
At present the boat is moored up in the centre of town on the river Witham, at Boston,this is a tidal stretch of the river. I don`t have the funds to get her seaworthy, but it would be very easy ,within a few weeks if a determined effort was made, the engine was working perfectly 2 years ago, she has nav, lights but no electronics, steering is by wheel and chain in the wheelhouse, and cables to the tiller/rudder
down below has been converted for a single owner, (or a very close couple) to live, but quite simply, I have been trying to make her completely self sufficient, you could move on tomorrow (right down to TV and brasso and furniture polish ......This craft is just perfect for someone who likes pottering about with boats, whilst improving it and possibly living on board,or even for a holiday retreat (as in a country cottage) I have enjoyed 12 years of just this, spending more time on her than at home, (shop just round the corner, pub even closer)....She is equipped with the following Rutland 913 wind generator,less than a year old,24 volt ex army generator,carbon monoxide alarm, solid fuel stove,24 volt T,V, radio,10 foot pram dinghywith seagull outboard,.......I would also consider swapping the craft for a good VINTAGE car,
