"Hullabaloo" is a Beneteau First 210 with a blue hull and white deck. Sail Number GBR 4580
An attractive well regarded boat introduced in 1993 with distinctive blue hull. The First 210 benefits from positive internal buoyancy which makes it virtually unsinkable.
The First 210 has gained a reputation as a “pocket rocket” as it is a very quick boat for its length, quicker than many much larger boats on the water, and rates really well on handicap when racing.
Hullabaloo is easy to sail for a novice crew or expert. She handles beautifully and is very close winded due to the deep fin keel when in the lowered position, but also with the keel in the raised position, able to explore the creeks and shallower areas as well as lower cost shoal draft moorings.
Hullabaloo has the distinctive blue GRP hull favoured as an option by Beneteau over many years.
The stainless steel standing rigging and rigging screws have been recently fully replaced with new. The rig is a fractional sloop with broad spreaders and wide shroud base meaning that the jib only has a small overlap making sail handling and tacking easy. The jib is also on a Roller Furler.
The new Northrop jib is made from high spec Dacron. In order to preserve the best sail shape possible, this sail is not fitted with a UV protection strip to the luff. A separate jib sleeve cover is provided for when the boat is not in use to protect the sail.
The new Northrop mainsail is fully battened high spec Dacron. The battens are full length which creates a great sail shape and also helps when rolling up the sail. Both the above Northrop sails are new and have only been used once, in light conditions. An on boom sail coat protects the mainsail from UV if stored on the boom.
There is a spare jib by Kemp Sails which is in very good condition.
For downwind sailing, Hullabaloo has both a very good condition symmetrical spinnaker, as well as a little used cruising asymmetric sail which is complete with a snuffer.
All sails have sail bags for when sails are not in use or in storage.
On deck, Hullabaloo has benefited from several upgrades including fully refurbished halyard deck organisers, new quality ratchet block on the mainsheet, new ratchet blocks for the spinnaker sheets, new reefing horn, and various cleats and rope clutches. There are two winches on the cabin top that work as both halyard and jib sheet winches. Running rigging has been replaced as required.
The hull itself, has a racy, virtually plumb stem and a vertical open transom which maximises the waterline length.
The First 210 has a wide stern, so steering is via dual transom-hung rudders angled outwards at about 15° allowing for a light balanced helm, even when heeled. Steering is controlled by a new custom made solid mahogany varnished tiller with a Spinlock adjustable tiller extension.
Hullabaloo has a 350Kg cast iron swing keel with draft of 5.83 ft (1.78 m) when lowered, 2.33 ft (0.71 m) when raised. The keel is raised and lowered using a winch handle on the top of the keel case. The bearing cap has recently been replaced.
Down below, as the First 210 has a wide stern, she also has a large volume below for her length. She is simply fitted out, with sleeping accommodation for 4 people. A twin berth in the bow, and long single berths each side of the companionway that can accommodate people well over 6’ tall. There is a Campingaz single burner stove to port and a JVC stereo radio with CD player to starboard. There is also a fire extinguisher to port of the companionway.
Her current and previous owners have fitted the boat out with racing in mind, but she is very suitable for cruising and basic overnight camping if required.
With the exception of the speed log, there are no through hull fittings.
Electrics consists of a 12v Lead Acid battery in a battery box in the storage locker forward of the keel box, where the depth and speed log are also located. Power is controlled from a switch panel to starboard.
Electronics and navigation consist of a Simrad RD68 DSC VHF marine radio with mast head aerial, a Simrad IS12 dual Speed and Depth display on the cockpit bulkhead, together with a Plasimo Mini Contest compass. The mast top navigation lights are LED.
Other items are a CQR style anchor complete with a length of chain and a 4 plait rope rode spliced to the chain and stowed in a mesh draining anchor bag. There is also an old but serviceable life ring.
Mechanical propulsion is provided by a recent lightly used Mercury 5hp four stroke Sailpower outboard motor, mounted on a new spring loaded outboard motor bracket. The engine easily drives the boat for docking and manoeuvring and longer distance if needed, as the motor has a 1ltr built-in fuel tank as well as a new 12ltr remote fuel tank and fuel line assembly with quick release connectors, kept in the aft cockpit locker to port. Although not currently connected, the engine is also fitted with a 12v charging coil to charge the battery if required.
There are various warps and fenders supplied with the boat.
For road transport, Hullabaloo has a new 1800Kg max tow weight Mecanoram galvanised single axle road trailer which is complete with spare wheel, two speed winch, hull pads and plumbed in fresh water hub flush. The trailer alone cost £4,500.
The Beneteau First 210 is an ideal low cost step up from dinghy sailing or for someone looking to downsize to a smaller boat. A great and rewarding boat for beginner and expert alike!
