CAPREOLUS was built by R A Newman of Poole in 1960. She (and a number of other USA built classes and types of her era) were directly inspired by vessels such as the famous S&S designed Ocean racing yawl Finisterre. The most prolific designer of the type was Aage Nielsen who went on to design a number of classes for S&S and Hinckley, all very similar to CAPREOLUS. Other typical examples of the type are the 35’ Gumdrop yawls, the Nevins yawls, and the Hinckley Pilot yawls. The design shows a handsome classic profile with a good degree of sheer and a classic transom on a long overhang. Her moderate but well balanced rig give her a reasonable turn of speed, while her classic rounded hull form and lines are reputed to give her very good sea keeping qualities.

Accommodation, Furnishings, Lockerage
Fairly simple and traditional accommodation. 2 saloon settees with provision for adjustable tube/canvas cots over. Upper storage over and behind the settees. The backrests can be lifted to provide wider berths and give access to stowages behind and below. 2 overlapping berths fwd. No quarter berth fitted.
Upholstery well used but serviceable.
Sole boards (flooring) of timber panels, mostly liftable hardwood panels/planks and in various condition. Generally serviceable.
A large hardwood central table with stowage beneath opens out to the width of the saloon.
There is a small navigation area and gear stowage aft to stbd.
The galley area is at the aft end of the saloon to port and comprises a gimballed paraffin cooker, sinks, lockers, and a fridge/coolbox. The area is somewhat cramped and outdated. The cooker is very old and unsightly, the surrounding area is somewhat untidy and requires much cleaning and husbandry.
Heads compartment fwd of the saloon to port, accessible by a door from the saloon.
9. Construction and Structural Stiffening
Carvel construction. Approx 4” mahogany planking on 2”x1.5” steamed oak frames at 8” spacing. 2 x bronze rove fastenings per intersection. Hardwood fore and aft deadwoods. Heavy 4”x2” timber mid internal waterline height longitudinal stringers. Steel angle iron reinforcement knees and framing is used at all stress points and many of the deck beams and carlines. There is a complete ring frame either side of the main mast area linking together the whole of this area with the bilge frames, chainplates, main bulkhead, coachroof etc in way of the mast. Further steel reinforcements to the frames may be found in places such as aft in the engine area and fwd in in the fore deadwood area
A Raymarine Wheelpilot system is fitted to the wheel. Control display in cockpit.
Panel for 3x TackTick type instruments on binnacle hoop.
Rigel Steering compass on binnacle in serviceable condition
NASA Clipper Navtext
VHF/DSC Radio (appeared functional)
Raymarine Chartplotter/GPS
NASA Navtext
TackTick Micronet master display
Navigation Lights
Masthead Nav & Anchor Lights, Steaming light, Floodlight, Bow Bi-colour light, and Stern Light. All tested functional except port deck (lower) Nav light.
29. Engine and Installation
Indirectly cooled 30HP Beta B30 diesel (K42109) on resilient mountings on timber bearers. Noted some rusting to the mounting fittings which will need painting and preserving etc. Engine drives a standard Kanzaki type reduction gearbox. Output flange connected to an R&D flexible coupling. This drives the shaft via a bolted steel R&D shaft clamp. Noted the shaft clamp is now extremely rusty. Engine appeared in fair condition externally but would benefit from better cleaning and preservation. Good coolant antisiphon loop and break. Good VP weed strainer bowl. High rise exhaust outlet via a large plastic cylindrical water lock. SW cooling fed from a lever type hull seacock and traditional strainer tube just ahead of the engine.
Jeckell’s sails understood to date from 2011/2012. Genoa on 2018 forestay furler. Beige acrylic canvas sail covers, dodgers, and sprayhood. All in functional order Sprayhood on plain mild steel bars.
Lifesaving and Emergency Equipment
2 x Horseshoe lifebuoys fitted aft. MOB recovery sling seen in locker. Large box of 2022 pyrotechnics sighted. DSC VHF Tested correct. Safety line tethers in cockpit. Ocean Safety 6 man liferaft on aft deck. Still in-date for service
Firefighting Equipment
2016 2Kg DPFE (somewhat dirty/aged looking) by galley area. 2016 2Kg DPFE by Nav area. Fireblanket close by galley. A further 1Kg DPFE is fitted on the fore saloon by the mast. Functioning smoke or CO alarms: Although may be fitted, were not sighted or tested. Note a regularly tested functional CO alarm is now considered essential for vessels with open flame sources.
Note: Indicated location is approximate general area only.
