Where to start with Brian….
As featured in the Telegraph in June 2021, Brian is not just a boat, but such a unique, alluring and outright glorious home. He has been lovingly crafted from an empty shell from Collingwood into one of the most original boats on the cut, with not a single detail overlooked, or corner cut. Brian is eco-friendly, powered completely by electric, through a Lynch Engine that is charged from the 9 solar panels on the roof. Power is stored within 4 Lithium batteries which allows for 4 hours of continuous cruising with no solar input. The whole electrical system is Victron and is online, so you can check your solar yield and battery percentage from anywhere. As back up there is a generator or Brian can be connected to shore power. This allows for a blissful cruising experience with the engine being almost silent as you glide along the waterways, made easier in maneuvering with bow thrusters.
Brian has underfloor heating, powered by a diesel boiler and for those cosey winter evenings, he offers a Burley wood burner to keep things toasty. The black metal port holes and windows are double glazed, the 2 huge sky lights are triple glazed with 75-100ml of spray insulation and Celotex on the ceiling, walls and floors. Brian is a gasless boat, making the boat safety scheme inspections a breeze. Throughout the build there has been awareness of the environmental impact, with being solar powered, the use of reclaimed materials, eco paint, compost toilet and additional insulation.
The inside has been crafted into a boutique, designer home experience with so many quirky and charming features. The kitchen has curved concrete worktops, hammered copper Belfast sink, American black walnut breakfast bar and Mexican tile feature wall. The units are handmade Birch ply with soft close runners and all the home comforts you would expect, Induction hob, oven and grill, integrated washer/dryer and 12v fridge.
The reverse layout leads into the living space with hidden bilge wine and beer cooler, herringbone engineered oak flooring, reclaimed skateboard and walnut side hatch, sofa area providing additional space for overnight guests and bespoke curved wall leading into the passageway. Brian also has a quirky spare room that is currently set up as a study but can also fit a double bed with underneath storage. Continuing along the passageway is the luxury bathroom with a compost toilet complete with a urine separator and integrated extractor fan. The solid copper rainfall shower head provides a unique shower experience within the huge walk-in slate shower tray and Corten steel wall. The other features are made with reclaimed copper, designer ceramic and wall tiles and reclaimed sliding door.
The master bedroom at the bow end of the boat has a King size Ottamen bed providing substantial storage, integrated rattan wardrobes, wool carpet, reclaimed sliding pocket door and hardwood double glazed doors leading to the bow garden. The bow is the best place to enjoy a morning coffee and the beautiful sights of the river. Brian is an outstanding host too, when entertaining the stern has a pram cover with padded seating to sit 8-10 people, an ideal spot for riverside drinks or dinner parties, and even has significant storage in the seats and engine bay too.
Brian is currently moored on the river Avon between Bristol and Bath on a private pontoon that is available between April to October when the river levels are safe to navigate.
This project has been a labour of love for Tim and Hazel and every attention has been given to make Brian the most incredible boating experience.
