Wahkuna 1 is a Hans Christian 38T traditional cutter, hull number 73 registered in Canada. She was designed by Robert Perry and built by Anderson Yachts Ltd in Taipe, Taiwan in 1981 with a white GRP hull and teak accents. The interior is solid teak throughout giving a rich traditional feel. Originally the boat was fitted with teak decks but these were removed and replaced with painted fiberglass decks, all the while keeping original accents that make the charm of this classic boat.
Wahkuna's registered length is 11.6m with a beam if 3.8m and a draft of 1.8m. The mast is 14.4m and both the mast and boom are aluminium. The standing rigging is stainless steel wire to bronze turnbuckles to stainless steel blocks last renewed in 2012 by her previous, and only, owner just prior to sale to her present owner. Wahkuna got new chainplates ( double sided mirror polished) which have been installed in Febuary 2017. Her head sail was renewed in 2022 by Jeckells (England) and her main and stay sails were made by Lee (California) in 2012.
The main anchor has 46m chain plus 46m rope and her secondary anchor is a CQR 35 with 15m chain plus 91m rope.
The main engine, complete with gearbox, shaft and propeller plus a new exhaust system, was replaced in May 2023 with a Yanmar 4JH57 (57hp) engine. The engine hours are currently 153 and the installation was undertaken by Le Chantier Naval du Crapaud, Bretagne, France. There are two 170 litre diesel tanks. In addition there is a 6KVA diesel generator consisting of a Kubota Z482E engine with its own 170 litre tank. Diesel from this tank is also used to power a heater with ducting throughout the boat. In addition a 80 Litres per hour water maker is also fitted. There are two 170 litre water tanks.
Wahkuna was originally built for the American market and the internal mains distribution is 110V. However the current owner brought the boat to Europe where the mains system is 240V and subsequently installed an isolating transformer for use here. Consequently both 110V and 240V are available in the interior of the boat 2021-2022. The house batteries are 12V, charged by 3x135W solar panels, and inverters are installed to provide mains voltage when shore power is not available.
Navigation is provided by a Raymarine A75 chart plotter with a full set of European charts. A Vesper Marine XB-6000 AIS is installed and wind guage and depth finder are Nasa Clipper instruments. A CPT Autopilot was installed in April 2024. A Badboy WiFi booster with a TP Link router can help boost the WiFi signal available in most marinas and distribute it within the boat.
New International “Micron 350” antifouling was applied this year and during Covid in 2020 the opportunity was taken to repaint the gelcoat of the hull and the deck. Inside the entire saloon and navigation sitting area cushions have been reupholsted in January 2026. The shower was re-tiled, with brand new stainless steel tap for the sink and the shower and a new head were all installed in 2022. The inside of the boat was also entirely revarnished and painted 2021-2022. In the galley a new ENO 3 burner with oven cooker plus a new low consumption Isotherm fridge were installed 2022, as well as a new sink and plumbing and a new stainless steel elegant tap.
In November 2025, the entire stailess steel davits was replaced with bran new stainless steel rod. The cockpit has a bbq which burners were updated in 2022. The cockpit cushions were also reupholsted in 2022-2023.
There is a full set of sail covers and an enclosure for the cockpit ( with Clear marine vinal screen and Phyphertex UV/Bug screens) which can be useful at anchor or in a marina.
The tender is a Fatty Knees hard dinghy, refurbished in April 2022 with a 2hp outboard. There is also a mast and sail for use with it if desired.
