Ben is a 45 foot (5.5ft wide) house boat that has been on the canal since 1877- making it one of the oldest known canal boats in Oxfordshire. It has been through several renewals since then with an all new hull and upper portion but the original cast iron ribs on the inside are still there.
Ben comes with arguably the best mooring in Oxford at 1a Hythe Bridge Street Canal- the closest possible permanent position to Oxford City Centre, Oxford University, and soon to be redeveloped Oxford train station. Despite being in the epicentre of the city, the mooring feels reclusive and surrounded by nature. You can follow the link below to read hundreds of Airbnb reviews from people's stays on Ben during its time on the site between 2015-2022.
Last year, the mooring fee was £4973.53 with an additional £1112.45 for the Canal and River trust License fee (this would be expected to remain the same but can fluctuate year to year). Other regular costs are electricity- topped up online at roughly £30 a month for one persons basic usage- and council tax which is currently £128 per month. Water is included in the mooring fee and is transferred by hose into the boat’s water tank from a tap right outside on the bank. There is also shared washing machine and tumble dryer that is looked after by one of our lovely neighbours which costs £20 a year (to cover repairs) and is 3 minutes walk up from the mooring.
The boat has a trickle battery charger, and an inverter for charging phone/laptop while cruising. It is powered by 240 mains when attached to the shore bollard at the mooring. In addition there are lights and water pumps which work from 2 x 12 volt car batteries. There is also an Eberspacher water heater installed but currently out of use.
Other amenities include a wood/coal burning stove for winter heating, gas oven and hob, small fridge, shower and camping toilet which is emptied at a sanitary station (same place as the washing machine and dryer).
