RUMPUS OF LYMINGTON is a fine example of an Oyster cutter rig ketch, designed by Holman & Pye and is British Registered.
Built in 1982 with additions in 1983-4 she has had one owner for forty years. She is an iconic sight in her home port of Lymington, well known and much admired. The owner, who is now retiring from yacht ownership, has lived within three miles of the boat throughout the forty years and has lavished his constant attention on her.
She is a heavy displacement pilot house ketch with cutter rig and lives up to the Oyster reputation for exceptionally high build quality.
Never chartered or lent out, Rumpus has been used for annual holidays to the West Country, Scillies, Normandy, Channel Islands, North and South Brittany, together with numerous day trips in the local area of The Solent and Poole Bay. She is active all year round, except for a lift-out period of two weeks a year for a thorough annual inspection and maintenance.
The possibility exists for the new owner to retain her current marina berth in Lymington.
Examples of her build quality are the heavy gauge stainless standing rigging and the Whitlock solid rod and gearbox steering system. The hull has been protected from new by four coats of epoxy resin. The 2025 survey reported it to be in good condition.
She comes with a full set of well-maintained sails comprising mainsail, mizzen sail, furling high cut yankee, furling staysail, mizzen staysail and full-cut radial spinnaker.
She has Simpson Lawrence davits holding a six man, 3.2m Avon rigid inflatable with Mariner outboard. The substantial sprayhood was replaced in 2022, the Lofrans Tigres anchor windlass was new in 2024. Her teak decks were all replaced to a high standard in 2014 at a cost of over £40,000.
The Sabre Perkins M92 naturally aspirated diesel engine, which is a replacement engine, develops 90 bhp allowing a top speed of nine knots via a direct shaft drive to a Featherstream folding four bladed propeller (2022). It also incorporates a Jabsco engine-driven high volume bilge pump. In addition, Rumpus has been fitted with a powerful bow thruster (2010).
Other features of particular note are the highly effective 60lb CQR anchor, the Eberspächer catalytic central heating system, the shore charging for the batteries, the 240volt on-board ring main for use in port, Furuno radar, and deck floodlights.
A detailed layout plan is attached. She has three cabins with a total of seven berths, and two heads both with showers, together with a further double berth in the saloon, if required. There is a fourth cabin which accommodates a workshop. Hull length is 14.1 metres, beam 4.27 metres and draft 1.98 metres.
In summary, Rumpus is a superbly built Oyster yacht of exceptional provenance.
