Built in 2003 (completed 2004) by Castle Boat Builders in Worksop Nottinghamshire, Madge Wildfire is an exceptionally beautiful and well kept 40ft narrowboat.
Professionally painted in 2018, her external paintwork is immaculate, having been regularly polished since. Her flowing lines and relatively compact size make her easy to manoeuvre and ideal for constant cruising on busier waterways.
Her interior is a great mix of contemporary design and attractive wood - unfussy and full of well-thought-through details. Completely ready & properly equipped for immediate live-aboard and/or cruising she is a very reliable and enjoyable craft to own.
Details:
Length: 40ft

BSS - Renewed May 2019. Expires July 2023.
Exterior professionally painted by a very reputable craftsman in covered dry dock (cost £6000) just over 2 years ago and still almost immaculate. With proper care should last another 8-10 years. Shell in a traditional style. Decks are all steel and self draining. All decks water tight with no rainwater entering interior.
At a glance:
Engine: BMC 1.5 with PRM Delta 20 Gearbox. Cooling is through a sealed skin tank. Diesel tank holds 180 litres. Serviced regularly. Last one September 2020 with oil and filters changed.
Electrics - 12v & 240v (300W Victron Inverter) with 1 x starter, 2 x leisure batteries. Batteries charged by the 70a alternator on the engine or the large securely mounted solar panel on the roof with 185W capacity. There are plenty 12v & 240v sockets throughout the boat.
Gas System - Gas locker has room for 1 x 13kg bottle & 1 x back up 6kg bottle, so you should never run out.
Heating - Boatman Heron Stove in cabin. Additional Eberspacher 4200W Diesel powered system which can provide timed hot water and hot air heating in the bedroom & bathroom via a programmable control panel in the bedroom (would need to be serviced as not used over the summer).
Water - Large 630 litre stainless steel tank with water meter in cabin. Hot water from calorifier (using engine or Eberspacher - see above).
Detailed description:
Entry into boat from front which has a cratch cover and lots of room for dry storage of coal/supplies etc in winter. It is also a lovely space to sit in the summer. Steel doors into the boat are in split 'stable' style which provide security as well as the flexibility to open either top door for ventilation/heat control without having to open the whole door fully.
Cabin:
A cosy and stylish space featuring 2 in-built sofas with lots of storage which can be converted to a double bed. One sofa is long enough to stretch out fully on which is very relaxing on winter evenings with the fire lit. All cushions are covered in the hard-wearing, stain & fire resistant, Danish designed Kvadrat fabric. Porthole windows throughout give privacy, security and a lovely ‘boaty’ feel, and a roof prism lets extra light into the living area which is really nice to have on darker winter days.
The Boatman Heron stove is more than adequate to heat the whole boat. The stove was serviced in September 2020 by Jason at Denham Marina and is in very good, safe condition with a new blue grey paint finish matching a newly tiled hearth. In the cabin there are also wall mounted solar power, battery and water meters, which let you monitor things in comfort.
Kitchen:
Well designed and uncluttered with sleek units and built in appliances. Lots of storage. The swan hatch is a lovely feature which lets you watch the outside world float by whilst cooking or washing up.
Kitchen Appliances:
Vanette 4000/2 Gas Hob with 4 Burners
Vanette GG2200 Gas Oven
Electrolux RM212F Fridge - Dual Gas & Electric
Bedroom:
Double bed with considerable under bed storage.
Hot water tank also housed under the bed, which effectively stops the common boat problem of condensation.
Immaculate Eve mattress (£500 bought new).
Cupboard above bed for clothes storage plus wall mounted hanging rails.
A second roof prism above the bed lets light in when needed but a porthole bung (several provided throughout the boat) can be used to seal it when preferred. There are also two more portholes on either side of the bed (which also have their own specially made bungs).
The Engine Room:
Neatly carpeted which helps reduce noise and smells into main living area. Engine is accessed via an easily removed hatch. Most of the floor can also be taken up to access batteries, bilges etc. Neat and well-labelled control panel which includes a Smart Gauge to accurately monitor batteries. Lots of storage cupboards for mooring equipment etc plus a handy clothes rail. The back doors are wood lined steel with a sliding steel roof hatch to allow easy interior access when cruising.
At the stern the weed hatch is accessible via a floor hatch into an engine bay space which also houses the stern gland greaser and the Eberspacher heating system and it's separate fuel tank.
Madge comes with a full range of cruising and mooring equipment including a new set of traditional style synthetic hemp mooring lines, 2 x windlass, assorted chains and lots of non bent pins!
